Bread Not Bombs
A Political Agenda for Social Justice A world of "bread not bombs" is the future that Senator Douglas Roche envisions. Housing, health, and education services are desperately needed for the world's poorest people but instead governments spend billions on war and on the weapons of war.
Social justice in a world of plenty seems farther off than ever with six billion people on the earth. But international organizations are mobilizing to achieve a global civil society for the 21st century. Through the Internet, information about the Earth Charter, the Tobin tax, The Hague Appeal for Peace, the Ottawa Process to Ban Landmines and other movements, is creating a new awareness worldwide of the issues facing us in the next century.
Senator Roche advocates that human security is possible, but only if the international community builds the conditions for peace through nuclear disarmament and co-operation to ensure equitable economic and social development. He foresees Canada taking a crucial role, building on its international reputation as a peacemaker.
